Intertie, Tertie, Tie (2008)
Intertie, Tertie, Tie is a multiple-possibility structured piece of recorded music, an improvisation accompaniment and a game of table tennis.
The prerecorded music is divided into multiple sections which can advance towards multiple possibilities depending on the progression of the game of table-tennis. While the game itself determines the probabilities of the occurrence of different sections, the sound from the players bats and the table are also manipulated in improvised fashion against the multi-structured pre-recorded backdrop.
For the live performance , two players play the table tennis match. And two electronic musicians manipulate the sounds from the match and best attempt to complement the recorded music. Both bats and the table are fitted with piezo transducers.
The image to the right shows the possibilities of the progression of the recorded element of the piece. Beginning at a fixed position and faced with the prospect of two different possibilities. Each of the following nodes offers two different possibilities until the fourth section which gives four different routes, followed by three, then two and then offers two seperate ending segments.
