Self Destructive Recordings (2015)

In 2015 I begun to make modified cassette chassis that were loaded with magnets. The magnetic strip is placed inside the cassette chassis touching the tape next to the retrieval spool. The first playing of the tape is unblemished but the second pass  ruins the recording, leaving barely enough information to just recognise it.  I had originally thought that each pass of the magnet would degrade the sound further and further but this is not the case. Once the magnetic particles have been altered by the magnet they stay written in the field they have passed through.

To make an ever changing piece I made a short tape loop and replaced the magnetic strip with points of sandpaper over which the tape passes. This way the the physical tape itself takes the burden of transformation and becomes further and further damaged the more it is played. Eventually the loop will break.
